The opening reception, vendor booths and most sessions in both tracks take place on the Mezzanine Level. Most sessions are in the Carolina Ballroom A or B. The Friday Luncheon Keynote & Awards Ceremony, along with the Annual Meeting, will take place in the Colonial Ballroom (we didn’t name it!) on the First Floor.

Rebuild Local News and journalism legislation around the country

Anna Brugmann from Rebuild Local News discusses pending and upcoming legislative approaches to funding and supporting media.

Anna Brugmann is the director of policy at Rebuild Local News. She’s covered county government, education and health care for local publications in Florida and Missouri. She studied the intersection of antitrust policy and the local press while an intern at Open Markets Institute and her journalism has appeared in the Washington Post and Washington Monthly. Brugmann has also studied audience trust and taught media literacy while a Peace Corps volunteer in Albania.

Collaborations: What does a successful multi-newsroom collaboration look like and how can you replicate it?

Chris Rudisill from the Charlotte Journalism Collaborative in Charlotte is joined by Alvaro Gurdian, publisher of La Noticia, to talk about how they (and others) have formed a collaborative news organization which then partnered with local artists during the pandemic to create comics based on news stories.

 

 

Chris Rudisill is a scholar, public speaker, artist and journalist. A North Carolina native, Chris is the Director of the Charlotte Journalism Collaborative and is a regular contributor for qnotes. He has written for Huffington Post, The Sun News, and is a 2020 Solutions Journalism Network Mentee. He has been a guest speaker at a variety of national LGBTQ events, including being featured in 2017 on NBCComcast Newmakers. He also works as a studio artist with a focus on fiber art and painting.

Dale Anglin, Executive Director of Press Forward, visits with AAN publishers and leaders to discuss ways that Press Forward can benefit your publication and community.

Dale Anglin is the executive director of Press Forward. Previously, Anglin served as the vice president for proactive grantmaking at the Cleveland Foundation, where she worked to align the foundation’s grantmaking initiatives to the ongoing needs of diverse communities in Cuyahoga, Lake and Geauga counties. Anglin also led the foundation’s journalism strategy, where she encouraged leaders to embrace local news and information as a community need and invest in a regional network of nonprofit journalism initiatives, including Signal Ohio.

Election Fact-Checking Tools and Best Practices

In this RTDNA/Google News Initiative training, we’ll explore ways to fight back against misinformation and disinformation during election coverage. We’ll use tools such as Google Fact-Check Explorer to track fact-checked images and stories. We’ll use reverse image search and other Google tools to check election claims. We’ll break down doctored video and audio with WatchFramebyFrame and Deepfake-o-meter. We’ll also look at the innovative Rolliapp.com to track disinformation spreaders on social channels.

Prior to the training, set up a free Rolliapp.com “press pass” account, as it takes a couple of days to get approved. Participants get a handout with links to tools and exercise materials you can take to your newsroom.

Lunch is served! All attendees are welcome for the keynote presentation by Michael Bolden (President of the American Press Institute) on the future of journalism and democracy in America, followed by the presentation of the 2024 AAN Awards.

Michael D. Bolden is CEO and executive director of the American Press Institute, a journalism nonprofit that supports local and community-based media through research, programs and products that foster healthy, responsive and resilient news organizations. Previously, Bolden was a managing editor at The San Francisco Chronicle. Earlier in his career, he was a journalism lecturer at Stanford University and managing director of the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships. He also served as editorial director for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. For more than a decade, he was an editor at The Washington Post, where he participated in two Pulitzer-winning features. He’s also been a reporter and editor in Florida and Louisiana.

Bolden is a graduate of Stanford University and the University of Alabama. He also was a Maynard Media Academy Fellow at Harvard University. He is a longtime member of the National Press Club, AAJA, IRE, NABJ, NAHJ, ONA, SPJ and the Sigma Tau Delta International Honor Society. He serves as treasurer of the board of directors of the Student Press Law Center, the nonprofit that promotes, supports and defends the First Amendment rights of high school and college journalists. He lives in Northern Virginia.

AAN ASSOCIATION GUIDANCE DOCUMENT

AAN exists to provide services and leadership that ensure the success of its members, and to strengthen alternative journalism through advocacy and education. Our association bylaws, found on our website, outline the fundamental rules for our governance.
